The Next ISO 9001 Revision is coming in 2026

What you need to know
Although this update is not a complete transformation, it brings important enhancements that emphasize quality culture, ethical conduct, and more transparent risk management. This article outlines the confirmed changes, and offers a practical advice.

ISO 9001:2026
The final publication is anticipated for September 2026. Most updates are found in the non-mandatory sections (front matter and Annex A), which provide guidance for implementation. The core requirements (Clauses 4-10) feature only minor adjustments, resulting in a minimal transition burden for those already compliant with ISO 9001:2015.

Transition Period
Organizations will have a three-year transition period from September 2026 to 2029 to move from ISO 9001:2015 to ISO 9001:2026.

Confirmed Changes

1. Integration of Climate Considerations
The 2024 amendment is now formally included in Clause 4.1, mandating that organizations "consider climate change in their context". The requirements remain unchanged.

2. Expanded Leadership Responsibilities
Clause 5.1.1 now explicitly requires top management to "foster and exemplify a quality culture and ethical behaviour", with new guidance in the 2026 revision on how to demonstrate these traits.

3. Revised Quality Policy
The quality policy must now clearly state that it "takes into account the context of the organization and supports its strategic direction," thereby strengthening the link between the Quality Management System (QMS) and business strategy.

4. Clarified Risk and Opportunity Management
Clause 6.1 has been reorganized into sub-clauses (6.1.1 - 6.1.3) for greater clarity in differentiating actions related to risk management and opportunity pursuit. Annex A includes extensive guidance on both areas.

5. Enhanced Awareness Requirements
Clause 7.3 introduces a new requirement for employees to be aware of "quality culture and ethical behaviour.

6. If your organisation is already certified
The 2026 revision maintains the core framework, process approach, and fundamental requirements of the 2015 version. The focus in the next revision is on editorial enhancements and clarifications rather than the significant requirements. Sit tight and maintain current systems and consider the headings above. Be prepared to Implement them post the 2026 official revision release.

7. For Those Not Certified Yet
There’s no advantage in waiting for the 2026 revision's publication.
IQC recommends implementing ISO 9001:2015 now. Transitioning to ISO 9001:2026 in the future will be straightforward, as your existing QMS serves as an excellent foundation. Get certified now, and upgrade later at no extra cost.
